Over the years, I have found the best way to care for my face:
Do eat fruits, veggies, and drink plenty of water (esp important...while my face has been clear for a long time now...it still is an excellent indicator of my hydration level, getting kinda quasi-pimply and irritable when I haven't been drinking enough water)
Don't eat too much crap...sugar, fat, cheese, milk, chocolate...
Twice a day, wash your face with warm water. Not too hot, but just hot enough to rinse away the oils that build up--this involves splashing and light rubbing for about 30 seconds or more. I can feel the oil coming off my face when I do this.
Then rinse with cold water to close the pores...I found this to be a very important.
Don't make a habit of resting your hands on your face.
Twice a week, do facial mask.
Don't pick at pimples - especially those "blind" ones!
Then if you feel like applying something, go for it, but start out light...the last thing you want to do is completely, chemically strip away all your face's natural protective oils.
Do red mask must also note
